Tonkin Consulting has grown from humble beginnings in 1955 to a successful and thriving engineering, environmental and spatial consulting business we know today. In 1955 Berwick (Skip) Tonkin began what is now Tonkin Consulting from the double garage of his home in Woodville West. During the 1960’s a steadily increasing demand for consulting engineering services saw a growth for the company.

In the early 1970’s our strength in stormwater engineering was beginning to take hold with the development in house of the GENDRAIN software, the first of its kind in Australia and was a great success.

During the 1980’s the company expanded in the emerging field of traffic engineering.

At the start of the 1990’s we expanded our services into the field of environmental engineering undertaking Site Contamination assessments for various sites and commencing the companies long standing relationship with the Waste Management sector.

During the late 1990’s the organisation moved into the field of Spatial Consulting. Through internal interest in Geographical Information Systems and seeing the opportunities this would provide the company as a whole significant investment occurred in this emerging technology.

During this time we continued to provide services to Local Government, State Government and the private sector and had developed a reputation for being at the cutting edge of technology and engineering advances. This continued during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s with us again seeing an emerging market in the asset management field and deliberately entering this market with great success.

During the 2000’s we expanded geographically with a merger with Trevor R Jones Pty Ltd providing a presence in Mt Gambier and a move into Berri and Darwin in the later part of the decade.
